brillant(e)

Interfaces, crosslinks, relations or parallels between jewellery-design and fine arts

3rd April until 30th May 2004

Anton Frühauf, AtelierThe 90th birthday of meranese goldsmith Anton Frühauf is occasion for the exhibition "brilliant(e)". With his exceptional and experimental jewellery, Anton Frühauf belongs to the precursors of "New Jewellery" in Italy. His jewellery designs are marked out especially by their transcendence of the traditional notion of jewellery and their frequently picturesque or sculptural design, which makes them look like small-scale works of art. This characteristic of Anton Frühaufs work is the theme of the exhibition "brilliant(e)".

It is noticeable that over the last decades, more and more works were created which cannot definitely be categorised as either "pieces of jewellery" or "works of art". The exhibition shows only those jewellery designers and fine artists who display the interfaces, crosslinks, relations or parallels between jewellery design and fine arts in their work.
"Jewellery and/or art", "Jewellery by fine artists" and "Jewellery as a theme in fine art" are the three approaches to crossing boarders, which the exhibition "brilliant(e)" focuses on.

Under the heading "Jewellery and/or Art", pieces of jewellery are shown, the designs of which are marked out by a picturesque, graphic, conceptual or sculptural approach. Particular to these pieces of jewellery is that they are disconnected from their original, ornamental purpose and are becoming individual and autonomous objects.

"Art as Jewellery" relates to pieces of jewellery designed by fine artists. Frequently, ideas used in the fine arts have been transferred by the artists to the jewellery design, so that these pieces of jewellery are often "wearable works of art".

"Jewellery in Fine Art" is a contention on the theme of jewellery in fine art. Numerous artists have treated the social and cultural phenomenon of jewellery and used it as motive or material in their work.

We intend to give the beholder a new and unusual view of the 30,000-year-old phenomenon "jewellery". 44 different artistic interpretations of "jewellery" are shown, which aim to initiate a contemplation on the definition, purpose and meaning of jewellery.
