Merano arte is pleased to announce the exhibition “Cindy Sherman. That’s me – That’s not me. Early Works 1975 - 1977”, organized by the Verbund Collection Vienna, from February 1 to June 2, 2013.

For more than 35 years, Cindy Sherman (*1954 in Glen Ridge, New Jersey) has been visualizing a wide variety of role models and female identities. Contrary to what has hitherto been believed, the famous Untitled Film Stills (1977-1980) are not Sherman’s first works; rather, a large number of early works were made from 1975 to 1977 in Buffalo, and they became the foundation of her future oeuvre. During those years, she adopted the masquerade as her personal art concept and then took a large number of photographs, many of which are still unknown today, that combine numerous theater and movie elements.

On behalf of SAMMLUNG VERBUND, Gabriele Schor worked with Cindy Sherman for three years to scientifically analyze the conceptual and performative beginnings of her work.
The exhibition will present roughly 50 of her works that were purchased for SAMMLUNG VERBUND over the years since it was founded in 2004.
